Institute Introduction
TheInstitute of Atomic and Molecular PhysicsatSichuan Universitywas established in 1984 by the distinguished physicistProfessor Gou Qingquanat the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology. The Institute was founded based on China's firstDevelopment Plan for Atomic and Molecular Physics (1977), formulated under Professor Gou's leadership. Since its establishment, the Institute has been committed to addressing national strategic needs through frontier research inatomic and molecular physics under extreme conditions, high-pressure science and technology, and advanced materials synthesis. It has made significant contributions to theoretical developments, the generation of reliable atomic and molecular data, and the cultivation of high-level scientific talent.
The Institute is home to theNational Key Discipline of Atomic and Molecular Physicsand jointly operates theKey Laboratory of High Energy Density Physics and Technology of the Ministry of Educationwith the College of Physics. It is authorized to confer doctoral degrees inAtomic and Molecular PhysicsandHigh-Pressure Science and Technology, and hosts aPostdoctoral Research Station in Physics. To support cutting-edge research, the Institute has established a comprehensive range of advanced experimental and computational facilities, includingdynamic and static high-pressure platforms, shock-tube and transient spectroscopy systems, extreme-condition Raman spectroscopy facilities, a high-performance computing platform, and quantum-dot materials synthesis and characterization laboratories. These research infrastructures support interdisciplinary research teams working in atomic and molecular processes under extreme conditions, materials genome engineering, high-pressure science and technology, quantum-dot materials physics and chemistry, and extreme-condition physics and geophysics.
The Institute has built a distinguished academic community comprisingtwo part-time academicians, one full-time senior international scholar, three part-time nationally recognized talents, one recipient of the State Council Special Government Allowance, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, two Tier-II Professors of Sichuan University, and eight recipients of provincial-level talent programs, including the Tianfu Qingcheng Program, Tianfu Emei Program, Sichuan Outstanding Young Scientists Program, and Sichuan Academic and Technical Leaders Program. Research at the Institute spans a broad spectrum of frontier areas, includingatomic and molecular processes under extreme conditions, light–matter interactions, molecular structure and intermolecular interaction theory, atomic and molecular behavior in condensed matter, atomistic simulation of nanomaterials and advanced materials, physical chemistry of quantum-dot materials, transient spectroscopy and combustion kinetics, atomic and molecular design and high-pressure synthesis of materials, novel superhard materials, advanced high-pressure technologies, and the physics of the Earth's and planetary interiors.
Over the past five years, the Institute has undertakenmore than 200 competitive research projects, including grants from theNational Natural Science Foundation of China, national major science and technology programs, projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, international collaborative research programs, and industrial research contracts, with a total research funding exceedingRMB 60 million. During this period, Institute researchers have been awardedmore than 20 invention patentsand publishedover 400 SCI-indexed papersin leading international journals, includingScience, Physical Review Letters,Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America,Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Chemistry of Materials, Journal of the American Chemical Society, and Angewandte Chemie International Edition. The Institute has achieved internationally recognized excellence inatomic and molecular structure and dynamics, high-pressure science and technology, and the fundamental mechanisms and rational design of advanced materials. Its research outcomes have provided important scientific support for China's technological and economic development, while several innovative technologies have been successfully transferred to industry, contributing to technological advancement in multiple sectors. The Institute has also established long-term collaborative partnerships with numerous leading universities and research institutions worldwide. Over the past four decades, it has educatedmore than 2,000 outstanding graduatesin atomic and molecular physics and related disciplines, many of whom have become leading scientists, engineers, and educators both in China and internationally.
